The Renault 12 had the difficult task of succeeding the icon that was the R8. A little less than two years after its launch, the R12 inherited a sports version called "Gordini". This time "The Sorcerer" Amédée Gordini allowed the Cléon-Alu engine to push 113 horsepower! These R12 Gs were used in the Renault Gordini Cup as a replacement for the Renault 8 Gordini. It was in this cup that a certain René Metge (future three-time winner of the Paris-Dakar) distinguished himself for the first time in his career, during the 1972 season.
